The Netherlands gaming market has increased in 2023

The Kansspelautoriteit (an independent regulatory authority in the Netherlands) revealed in a statement on its official website that the regulated Dutch gambling market is doing well, with the market in 2023 overtaking the size of the market in 2022.

The market has slowed significantly overall, not least when compared to other nations, despite a consistent influx of new brands throughout the year, including suppliers and operators.

In the meantime, the regulator observes that the market is ahead of the gambling revenue collected at the end of 2022, which stood at $1.08 billion, with a gambling revenue of $1.39 billion at the end of 2023. Despite an increase in accounts, the regulator observed that the number of players has stayed relatively stable.

There were 1.1 million active players as of the end of 2023, rise from the 970,000 that were recorded the previous year. The Kansspelautoriteit calculates that 726,000 of these accounts were active in the second half of the year. The regulator is also looking at other metrics, like consumer spending averages, channelization into the regulated market, and, last but not least, the ways in which youth are engaging with the industry.

The good news is that the great majority of gamblers are investing in the regulated gambling market, with 90% of players visiting these sites. This indicates that the regulated gambling market is one of the best in Europe and has very strong channelization.

In terms of expenditure and loss, the watchdog reports that in the final half of the survey year, an average of €958 was lost, a marginal decrease from 2022 results. In the meantime, the watchdog also investigated in greater detail how individuals, and young adults in particular, interact with the industry.

A considerable percentage of all online gambling accounts are typically held by young people. The regulatory body defines "young people" as those who are under 23 years old. This group currently holds 22% of all accounts, despite making up less than 10% of the population. This suggests that gambling has been more effective when it comes to younger audiences.
