Macau’s Judiciary Police have arrested two mainland Chinese men for conducting unauthorized currency exchanges near casinos in the Cotai area, according to Macao Daily. The operations resulted in the seizure of nearly MOP 130,000 in cash and gaming chips.

The first incident occurred a few weeks ago, when officers observed suspicious interactions between a 32-year-old man surnamed Chen and a casino patron. Investigators determined that Chen had carried out at least two illegal exchange transactions before being apprehended.

Police confiscated HKD 53,500 (US$6,850) worth of chips, RMB 1,100 (US$150), HKD 200 in cash, and two mobile phones from Chen. The gambler involved was found in possession of HKD 19,000 in chips. All items were seized, and Chen was referred to the Public Prosecutions Office on suspicion of engaging in illegal foreign exchange activities related to gambling.

A second case took place a few days later, when officers detained a 33-year-old man surnamed Guan after witnessing him conduct a transaction near another Cotai casino.

Investigations revealed that Guan had exchanged RMB 18,800 for HKD 20,000 in gaming chips using a QR code payment. Further inquiries showed he had been involved in similar illegal exchanges in Macau since July. Police seized HKD 34,000 in cash, HKD 12,000 in chips, and a mobile phone linked to the case.

Authorities warned that underground currency exchange activities persist around casino zones despite ongoing enforcement efforts. Officials urged both residents and tourists to exchange money only through authorized financial institutions to help maintain Macau’s public security and financial stability.
